We’re flying towards our goal of finishing the April AtoZ Challenge 2018, and this is Off to War by American deviantartist Soulsplosion.
This is a concept art piece from the artist’s webcomic Aphelion, and they’ve written a really great description, so I’ll just let it speak for itself…
The dragons were grand and benevolent beasts that helped watch over Earth from above, known for their wisdom despite not even being able to speak with words–but rather, they telepathically communicated only the most abstract of emotions, and most of the time this was all that was needed.
Ronoko was the biggest and eldest of all the dragons, so big that she could no longer fly. She spent most of her time within her giant caverns beneath the earth, and this is where she rested for thousands of years until the day she was needed above. This was also the day that she died.
I haven’t had a chance to read the comic yet, but Soulsplosion’s description and artwork are amazing, so I’ll definitely be checking it out! You can also find their work in their main deviantart gallery, follow them on Tumblr and Instagram, and watch speedpaintings of their work on their YouTube channel (including of this one, Off to War).
I’m keeping it simple this year with my theme of “Odds and Ends Dragons” — amazing artwork by artists I’ve come across in past searches, but wasn’t able to find a spot for at the time. Read more at my Theme Post.
All of these AtoZ posts should appear around 9:05 AM CT (-5 GMT) each day Monday through Saturday. For even more dragons, check out my 2016 and 2017 posts!
Thanks for reading, take care, and stay creative!

Yeah I know, if that’s the size of a ‘normal’ dragon, this one is massive! Thanks for stopping!

Ha, I know right? I actually think that tiny dragon is just visiting her cavern and is on a rock ledge, perhaps. Thanks for stopping by!
