N is for Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu by LEGO
On to the next fandom in the April 2017 AtoZ Challenge! I think everyone — from the young to the young at heart — enjoys Legos, and when you combine Lego with mystical ninjas and awesome elemental dragons, you get Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu!
Lego Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu (also known as Ninjago), is an American–Danish action comedy family animated TV series that centers on the adventures of six ninja: Kai, Cole, Jay, Zane, Lloyd (as of Season 2), and Nya (as of Season 5). The series is based on the Lego toy series of the same name.
Dan and Kevin Hageman, who wrote Lego Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu and co-wrote the story of The Lego Movie, will be penning the film adaptation, which will feature a new take that diverges from the TV series. … The spin-off movie will be released by Warner Bros. Pictures on September 22, 2017.
The Dragons are mystical creatures that live in Ninjago. They are said to be connected to both Ninjago and the Underworld, enabling them to travel between the two worlds at will. They were the Guardians of the four Golden Weapons, and were generally not vicious unless the Weapons are threatened.
Aren’t those cute? Those are the four dragons as pets in the video game LEGO Universe from the wiki; below, you can see them in their full build versions. The Ninjago heroes master the elements of Earth, Ice, Fire, and Lightning and match their corresponding dragons; later, the two additional ninjas master Energy (Light) and Water.
Interestingly, Ninjago’s elements don’t follow the traditional Classical set of air, water, earth, and fire — nor the Chinese set of fire, water, earth, wood, and metal — nor even the Japanese set of Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Void.
I’m not sure why they chose the elements they did, unless it was just to be different, but the dragons do look great in both Lego and fanart form, so let’s get to the art, shall we?
This first image, created by South Korean deviantartist Baekim for New Year’s and called Happy2013, is really reminiscent of the featured image above. It shows the ninjas flying together on their dragons: the black ninja Cole on his Earth dragon Rocky; the blue ninja Jay on his Lightning dragon Wisp, with future ninja Nya riding along; next to Nya’s brother the red ninja Kai on his Fire dragon Flame; and finally, the white ninja Zane on his Ice dragon Shard. Check out more of Baekim’s awesome Lego animation art in her gallery or on her Tumblr.
Next up, American deviantartist Joshua Deck, posting as joshuad17, drew each of the ninjas and their dragons in very realistic form. Here is Earth Dragon, Lightning Dragon, Fire Dragon, and Ice Dragon — and you can find more of his Ninjago art, including some of the other dragons and his Ultimate Ninjago Poster, in his gallery.
Some artists use the actual Lego kits to make their art, and Canadian professional artist Bro Rowell Ancheta, posting as gawakita, posted this epic image of Lego Ninjago Zane and Ice Dragon looking about ready to pounce! Check out his eclectic fanart gallery for more.
Next up is this great image by American deviantartist Natalie, posting as Dragonfangz, called Ninjago – Episode 4: Weapons of Destiny, referencing the episode in the first season of the show where the ninjas meet their dragons. Natalie quotes the red ninja Kai in her caption: “Once he realized we were trying to protect the sword of fire -heh- he actually became quite a softy.” Check out her gallery for more.
Finally, the elemental dragons eventually merge into one Ultra Dragon in order to help the ninjas protect Ninjago, becoming an epic four-headed beast that also appears in one of the series video games called Lego Ninjago: Shadow of Ronin. The Ultra Dragon from the wiki shows him like this:
Argentinian deviantartist GraubenDawb imagined the four-headed Ultra Dragon and their elemental markings in -Little mount- Ninjago. I think it’s a great interpretation! And four heads are always better than one, don’t you think? Check out her gallery for lots more fanart and dragons.
I’m excited for the upcoming Lego Ninjago movie, especially since the legendary Jackie Chan will be voicing the ninja Master Wu, and one of my favorite actors, Kumail Nanjiani, will be voicing the blue Lightning ninja Jay! I’ll probably post about it again when the movie comes out in September — I’m sure the dragons will look great on the big screen!
I’m a little late posting today, but I’m trying to get back on top of this AtoZ Challenge — we’ll see how I fare, wish me luck! Thanks as always for checking in, and come back tomorrow for “O” and more Dragons in Our Fandoms, when I dive into another video game franchise!
Take care, stay creative, and happy AtoZing!
