This is the elegant Moonveil Dragon by artist and author Todd Lockwood, a Red Creature – Dragon in the Wizards of the Coast CCG Magic the Gathering. I love the translucent wings. The flavor text on the card reads:
“Their hearts beat, their lungs draw breath, and they have one true form. I count them as allies of the living.” —Thalia, Knight-Cathar
I’m hoping for a bit of ‘magic’ this weekend, as I’ve set aside some hours specifically just for fiction writing — wish me luck! Todd has drawn lots of Magic cards, and you can find the entire list at the main WotC site. Here is another dragon called Prossh, Skyraider of Kher (although Todd’s site calls him the Skyhunter). He is a Black/Red/Green Legendary Creature – Dragon, and looks a little miffed!
And finally, here is a much calmer-looking dragon called Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius, a Blue/Red Legendary Creature – Dragon Wizard. Although, he may not always be this serene — the text on his card reads, “He has no patience for minds that do not inspire him or explode by trying.”
I love how Todd draws so many different styles of dragons, and these are just three great examples. Make sure you check out his website for even more great artwork!
You can also check out my post about Todd’s debut novel called The Summer Dragon: First Book of the Evertide, that the publisher Penguin Random House calls “a high fantasy adventure featuring dragons and deadly politics.” I really loved the book, and I can’t wait for the sequel! I also found this Reddit AMA that Todd did back in June if you’re looking for more info on his writing and illustrating craft.
Thanks for reading, have a good weekend, take care and stay creative!
