Thursday Writing Thoughts: A simple word…

Martinson Quote

A simple word or phrase on a blank sheet of paper gathers momentum as I wonder at what it could mean, where it could take place, why, and what if? . . . And then, I write.

Tyrean Martinson, A Jumble of 500+ Writing Prompts

I found this quote very appropriate for today as I contemplate the Neeka Story chapters I’m currently working on, and how these chapter have all sprung up from a single word (or two) using the weekly WordPress Discover Challenge as a guide each week.

So far I’ve spun out chapters based on the words Senses, Witness, Snapshots, Perspective, Memory, Identity, Risk, Obstacles, Chance Encounter, and Apology (although that one was a tenuous connection, I admit).  And as a sneak peak because I’m late, I’ll tell you the chapters I’m still working on were prompted by the words Learning and Adventure.  (Stay tuned!)

Thinking about it as a whole, this is such an interesting way to write (what I hope is eventually) a complete story, and I can’t wait to see what the WordPress admins come up with for the next word, and the next, and the next, to help me spur this story along.

Not only does each word gather momentum as I try to figure out what it means for Neeka and company, but the story itself is gaining momentum as I push myself to write even when I’m not sure where I’m going.

I’m trying to keep this short today so I can go write some more, so I’ll leave you with this pretty Green Dragon (to match the green above) by American professional artist Daniel Eskridge, posting on deviantart as deskridge.  He has prints of his beautiful art for sale at his online gallery, which I highly recommend you check out too!

I think a picture can work as well as a word to spark one’s creativity, and this dragon certainly looks like he’s about to do something interesting, don’t you think?

All right, off to the writing!  Take care and stay creative!
